In my spare time, I like to write and I’m a published author. I also love traveling the world with my Husband and trying new recipes!

Thought for the week...

As an HR Professional and just a decent human being, it's my goal to support as many career seekers that cross my path.

I continue to see candidates behaving at work the way they behave outside of work. While many believe employers don’t pay attention to employees outside activities, some actually have policies on this very topic. A company my for example have a policy preventing acceptance of gifts or having outside employment. Some even have policies on social media preventing employees from engaging in behavior that goes against their code of ethics or standards of conduct, like bullying, discrimination, and the like. But these and other behaviors like cursing, using racial terms or making sexual related comments or advances, remain prevalent in many workplaces.

So what’s being done? I wish I could confidently say that the Human Resources department of those workplaces are addressing these behaviors, but what happens if the manager, owner, or CEO says they don’t want to address the situation? It presents a realistic dilemma for many HR professionals. I would resolve that if we could start the development of career readiness in middle school, teaching some of the basic principles that will follow them regardless of their circumstances. It won’t be a remedy for everyone or for all situations, but it has the potential to set future employees up for some success by equipping them with the tools needed to navigate different workplace environments.
